Meningitis – know the signs and act fast

Meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. It can affect anyone but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults. Early symptoms can look like flu but someone with meningitis can become seriously ill very quickly.

Not everyone will have all symptoms and they can appear in any order. If you are worried someone may have meningitis seek urgent medical help. Call 999 or go to A&E immediately.

💉 Vaccination offers protection against several types of meningitis and is part of the routine NHS immunisation programme.

Symptoms can include:
• High temperature
• Severe headache
• Vomiting
• Stiff neck
• Sensitivity to light
• Drowsiness or confusion
• A rash that does not fade when pressed
